In 1861 Census of Cowling (living at Cragg Side) F 543092
John Smith (42 years) head of family – married – stone mason, born in Sutton
Betty Smith (very hard to read from microfilm) (35 years) wife – married –
worsted weaver, born in Cowling
Stephen Smith (13 years) son, unmarried, worsted weaver, born in Cowling
Mary Ann Smith (11 years) daughter, bobbin winder, born in Cowling
Thomas Smith (3 years) son, born in Cowling
William Smith (1 year) son, born in Cowling
(William and Alice Bannister are found at Cragside in both the 1851 and 1861 Census)

In 1871 Census of Cowling (living at Flood Root)
Alice is living with son, William Bannister
In 1841 William and Alice Bannister are living in Cowling at Lane Ends. They have nine children
and among those children is an Elizabeth. That Elizabeth is not with them in the 1851, 1861, or 1871 census.
Points of interest:
In the 1861 Cowling census, John and Elizabeth are living at Cragg Side on the same street as William and Alice Bannister were living on in the 1851 census. In the 1851 Census, they are
living in Sutton (birthplace of John Smith and Mary Ann Smith) but in 1861 they are living in Cowling (birthplace of Elizabeth – the place where Elizabeth Bannister was living with her
parents, William and Alice).
In my search of census records in this area, I found no trace of the Myrrl name.
It appears the only Myrrl name in the marriage index is Elizabeth Myrrl to John Smith. I have the marriage certificate. Interestingly, it lists Elizabeth’s father as William Myrrl, Farmer. (The 1851
and 1861 census records list William Bannister as a farmer.)
My thinking is that since Elizabeth and John’s first son was born 25 Aug 1847 and their marriage was 27 June 1847, that perhaps Elizabeth used the name of her grandmother (William Bannister’s
mother’s name was Nancy Mural).
This is the puzzle we are trying to solve in making a correct determination of Stephen Smith’s ancestry.
