Shared note
Herring Highlights Vol. II: Jacob entered the records when he received a grant of land, jointly with Joseph Herring, on the north side of the Neuse River in 1744. Another grant in 1762, after the area had been annexed in the creation of Dobbs county, adjoined his property to Joseph's. Tax lists in Dobbs and, then, in Wayne Co, 1769 and later, placed Jacob amongst Samuel Herring descendants -- Anthony, Michael, Joel, and Solomon Herring. The 1786 tax list for Wayne Co. shows Jacob Herring had 882 acres of land. Several deeds indicate he had 3 or 4 children. (Research):He named wife Unicy in his will probated in Sampson Co. NC in July 1794. He bought land in 1771( in Sampson?) On November 1, 1793 Joseph and Unicy give son Jacob a Negro girl named Cate, she being the child of a Negro woman given by them to daughter Unicy. This Joseph is listed on Sampson Co. census in 1790 with 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 5 females and 3 slaves.
