Thomas Cox, Vintner, and Thomas Cox, Grocer of London
Thomas Cox of London, England, Vintner left a will probated in London on 14 March 1711/12, in which he mentioned his 920 acres of land in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, 400 acres of land on Cooper’s Creek in Glouchester, West New Jersey, and his cousin, Mary Chandler, in Pennsylvania. This Thomas Cox was one of the proprietors of Pennsylvania and New Jersey whose name appears many times on early colony records. (See PA Archives) His son, Thomas, who inherited land in Pennsylvania, apprently never lived there but resided in London according to London Quarterly Meeting records. Thomas Cox, Vintner, son of Thomas Cox who lived near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Eng. b. ca. 1642, Glouchester, Eng. d. 15th of 1st mo. 1711/12, age 70, London, England; bur. Coverleys Field, mar. 2)9th of 5th mo. 1682, Devonshire Meeting House, London, Christian Matthews; mar. 2) 9th of 5th mo. 1682, Devonshire Meeting House, London, Anne Hind. Thomas was committed to New Gate Prison in 1672 for nonpayment of tithes to the Established Church.

Grace Staploe, dau. of John and Grace (Russell) Staploe, b. 19 Apr 1675, Parish of Buttolphs Aldersgate. John and Grace Staploe were married 25 Oct 1666, at Westbury Street Meeting, under the care of Pell Meeting, London, England. Grace Russell was the dau. of William Russell, of Gutter Lane, London.

Will of Thomas Cox
Thomas Cox citizen and wintner of London, 24 May 1709, with a codicil added 13 January 1711, proved 14 March 1711. To the two children of my late daughter-in-law, Mary Test, deceased, late wife of Daniel Test, eighty pounds, to be paid into the hands of my son Thomas Cox, towards their bringing up & etc. To my daughter-in-law Mary Frankling, forty nobles and to her six children, Thomas, Jacob, Mary, Sarah, Anne and Elizabeth, twenty nobles apiece. My daughter-in-law, Sara Plumstead, and her daughter, Mary Plumstead. My cousin, Richard Cooper, near Upton, Glouchestershire. Mary Edwards of Tredenton near Tewsbury in the same County. My cousin, Anne Weekes, who dwelt in Trinity Lane. My friend Hannah Marshall. To the poor of Whitechapel so many pounds as I have or shall (have) lived years in the parish, reckoning from the eleventh day of June 1666, two thirds part of it to be applied in the parish, reckoning from the eleventh day of June 1666, two thirds part of it to be applied towards the putting forth apprentices (boys and girls) from the free school of whitechapel. Item, I give and evise unto my said son Thomas Cox, in trust for his six children before named and their heirs &c. forever, eight hundred acres, part of my nine hundred and twenty acres of land already taken up in the Co. of Phildaelphia in the Province of Pennsylvania. To my cousin, Mary Chandler, now dwelling at Pennsylvania, the other remaining one hundred and twenty acres of land lying part upon a branch of Cooper’s Creek in the Co. of Gloucesther in the Province of West New Jersey in AMerica. My son-in-law, Lassells Metcalfe, and my duaghter, Christian, his wife, to have all my shares which I have in the Pennslvania Land Company and in the first old Pennsylvani Company. I give unto my said son-in-law and Christian, his wife, in trust for their two children, one hundred pounds which I disbursed towards assisting William Penn to compose his matters with Philip Forde. My wife, Anne Cox, and my brother-in-law, John Antrim, of Martin’s le Grand to be executors and Jacob Franklin, Samuel Waldenfield and John Field to be overseers. Thomas Cox of Londongrove, Chester County, Pennsylvania
Thomas Cox, Richard Cox and John Cox owned land adjacent to each other in Londongrove Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania and later moved York County. In the 1750’s Thomas, John, and a William Cox moved from York County to North Carolina. Although there are records linking these names, proof of their relationship has yet to be found. They first appear in the 1715 and 1718 tax lists for Kennet Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and then with Thomas Cox in the 1719 New Garden Township tax list. Both books are available on microfilm from the LDS family History Library. Records in nearby states apparently have not been searched.
