1851

I’ve got Martha Ann Lunds birth and when I get time I’ll go back to the library and see if I can find her family on the 1851 census.
Incidentally Damembs is now called Damems and there were at least two woollen mills in the area. However a lot of woolcombers worked from home and lost their jobs when machinery took over.
Then I got John Edward Smiths birth and you’ll see Goodley on it. This was in the Oakworth district and is no more. I was talking to the registrar and it was a name she hadn’t come across so I went to the library and looked it up in the 1871 census index and that’s how I know that it was somewhere in Oakworth.
I also got the birth certificates for Thomas Henry Smith and Arthur Clyde Smith.
But I couldn’t get a birth certificate for Joseph William – he’s not on the Keighley books. The registrar even rang the Bradford office and enquired while I was there so we don’t know where he was registered. BUT HE registered the death of Arthur Clyde when he was about 16. And I’ve got the death certificate to prove it.
So that’s the 5.
About the twin. There is no birth registered at the same time as Arthur, the registrar made a point of looking, and when a twin is registered they have the TIME of birth put on the certificate. Arthur hasn’t got that. I think there was a twin that was born and died on the same day and was quietly buried somewhere, so that is a mystery that will probably never be solved.
I’ll take the certificates to work tomorrow and copy them and if you send your address I’ll post them to you on Saturday.

These are the certificates I can get for you –
Birth of Martha Ann Lund 1846
Birth of Joseph William Smith -1867
Birth of Thomas Henry Smith 1875
Birth of Arthur Clyde Smith 1883
Death of Arthur Clyde Smith 1884.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to track down his twin but I could put a note on Arthurs birth request and ask if a twin is registered at the same time. If I can get a name I should be able to trace him/her.
As for John Edward Smith, I can’t find his birth registered in Keighley in 1871. However there are 2 John Smiths registered in Keighley Sept 1871. Do you want me to ask if either of them is the son of Stephen and Martha?

Yes I can get you a marriage certificate and two birth certificates but I have to go looking up the bmd index in Blackburn which might take a few weeks. As for Kildwick and Sutton in Craven, the records for them are in Skipton as far as I know and again I can’t get there for a week or two. Craven is the name of a district and was used in a name to identify a place. A good example is Marske and Marske- by- the -sea in N Yorkshire. Two completely different villages. Skipton is also in Craven district and there are lots of pubs around called the Craven Heifer celebrating a prize-winning cow from olden days!!!

I’m going to have to make enquiries as to where the records are for Cowling. Bear with me, I’ll get back to you. However as soon as I can in the next fortnight I will go over to Blackburn and see if I can track down
the b & d of the Smith children. BMD registers for England are in Blackburn Library.
Do you want me to look for Martha Ann Lunds birth while I’m there?
