chr 24 Oct 1847 Kildwick Parish, Keighley, Yorkshire, England
married Martha Ann Lund 26 Dec 1866 in District of Keighley, York Co. I have this marriage certificate.
His children:

4. Clyde Arthur born 19 Nov 1883 Oakworth, Keighley Parish, Yorkshire, England died 8 Aug 1884
Apparently there was also a twin that was born and died 19 Nov 1883
5. Martha Ann Beatrice (born in the United States)
We do not have birth certificates of any of these children born in England. Nor do we have the death certificates for Clyde and the twin who died in England.
Read a history of Stephen Smith in England written by my father, Joseph Theron Smith: Stephen Smith History
Stephen was the son of John and Elizabeth Smith. His Mother’s last name has not been properly verified but we are certain her first name was Elizabeth.
John Smith
born 11 May 1827 Sutton In Craven, Yorkshire, England
chr 24 May 1828
died 1 Aug 1897 Draughton, Yorkshire, England
John was a stonemason and Elizabeth was a worsted weaver. The birth records of the first three children lists John’s occupation as labourer.
Family History
1. Quoting from letter dated 13 Dec 1952 by Jack Smith: “John Smith was known as ‘Old Swift’. He had a pony and cart and went about hawking some sort of goods. He was also a good bass singer and walked miles to sing in churches, etc. but unfortunately he took to drink and things became so bad his wife left him and he went to live with a married daughter at Cowling. John lived at Draughton near Skipton.”
2. Letter from Jack Smith of England dated May 11, 1991 says his father attended John’s burial at Draughton.
Research problems (by Pam Werner):
1. I have a marriage certificate (Skipton, 1847, Parish of Kilwidk No. 167) for John Smith and Elizabeth Myrll 27 June 1847. Stephen Smith is listed as father.
The birth certificate for the second child, Mary Ann, states that her mother was “Elizabeth Smith formerly Merrall”. The birth certificates for Thomas and Stephen state their mother is “Elizabeth Smith formerly Myrrl”.
2. Jack Smith (relative living in England) says the church and cemetery at Draughton where John and son William died, was demolished.
3. Letter dated 10/5/1992 from Jack Smith (relative living in England) says they had five children. We currently only have four chidlren.
4. Birth entries in the Parish of Kildwick, reg. dist. Skipton, has Thomas’ birth as 13 Sept 1852 (different than letter from Daphne Deighton).
5. Dec. 30, 1976 when I researched the 1841 Census, I determined that Myrll was not Elizabeth’s last name because there were no Myrrll or Merrall names or anything similar in Cowling or Sutton. There were a few Merralls in Keighley 1841 Census.
6. Bishop’s Transcripts F919149, 1827-1843 chr & bur: John, son of Ellen Smith of Sutton b. 11 May 1827, chr 24 May 1828.
7. There is a John Smith, age 20 in 1841 living with Joseph Smith (age 57) of Draughton Township, Skipton Parish, page 1.
1861 Census
John and Betty are living at Cragg Side. John is 42 yrs (a stonemason born in Sutton) and Betty is 35 yrs. (a worsted weaver born in Cowling). They have 4 children, Stephen (13 yrs. unmarried; a worsted weaver born in Cowling), Mary Ann (11 yrs.; bobbin
winder born in Cowling), Thomas (3 yrs. born in Cowling), William (1 yr. born in Cowling).
1851 Census
John and Elizabeth are living at Brush. John is head of the family (30 years old and woolcomber; born in Sutton in Craven). His wife, Elizabeth, is 24 years (handloom worsted weaver; born in Cowling). They have two children, Stephen (3 yrs; born in Cowling) and Mary Ann (1 yr.; born in Sutton)
1871 Census
Stephen is 23, Mary Ann is 21, Thomas is 13, William is 10.
Bishops Transcripts: chr. & bur.: John, son of Ellen Smith of Sutton b. 11 May 1827, chr 24 May 1828
We believe the parents of John to be:
Stephen Smith
born 22 Jun 1788 Sutton, Kildwick, Yorkshire, England
chr 3 Aug 1788 Kildwick Church, Kildwick, Yorkshire, England
I found the Parish Register in Kildwick in Craven shows a John, son of Ellen Smith, born 11 May 1827
Ellen Bannister is believed to be the mother of John and wife of Stephen. Ellen is of Glusburn, Yorkshire.
We believe the parents of Stephen to be:
Titus Smith and Sarah Dale. Stephen was the seventh child of Stephen and Ellen.
Other information of note:
1. Kenneth Palmer (a relative) talked to a neighbor of Stephen and Marth Smith’s who didn’t know anything about their parents.
2. The burial record says his mother’s name is Charlotte Bannister.
3. It was reported that when Stephen was sealed in the Logan Temple to Martha Ann Lund, he indicated his mother was Elizabeth Bannister. (this came from Joseph Theron Smith)
4. Names of individuals who submitted to ancestral file for Stephen Smith: Beatrice Chugg (Rupert, Idaho), Joseph Nelson (Bountiful, Utah), Thomas N. Smith (Lehi, Utah), Dulcie Huff (Tempe, Arizona), Blaine Huff (Tempe, Arizona), Joseph Theron Smith (my father)
