*Objective*

The objective of this project is to match up individuals or families who share a common male ancestor with the Sasser surname and to trace the origins of the Sasser surname in America and back to Europe.

*The Plan*

The Sasser Surname DNA Project will perform a Y-chromosome test on any male descendant with the Sasser surname.  Women may participate by recruiting a brother, father, or other male relative with the Sasser surname.  The results will be maintaned to match future Sasser participants.  Current participants’ results and genealogies can be viewed on this website.

To participate in the Sasser DNA study, please go to the Sasser Surname
Project page
<http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=E55624>;, and complete a “Sasser Project Join Request.” You should then order the *Y-DNA25 *or Y-DNA37 paternal test.  Next, send a genealogy chart of your known male Sasser ancestry to the project’s administrator, Peter Roberts <mailto:[email protected]>;, at [email protected].

A test kit and concise instructions will be sent to each male participant. The participant will in turn provide a mouth swab sample to be analyzed by FamilyTreeDNA <http://www.familytreedna.com>;.  This painless sampling technique, administered in the privacy of the home, involves simply the self-administered use of a swab to collect a small amount of cells from the inside of the cheek.  FamilyTreeDNA will forward results to both the participant and the project administrator about 5 weeks after the laboratory’s receipt of the individual sample.  These results will include a report of the determination of a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) for the surname with a significant marker match.  Each participant will receive a report of his own results.  A
summary linking individuals to the MCRA will be posted on this website.  Participants will be identified on this site by their kit number only.

*Cost*

FamilyTreeDNA provides a group discount for its registered surname projects.  The 25 marker Y-DNA test is $169 plus postage, a $40 savings over the regular price of $209.  This is a private, non-commercial project for Sasser genealogists, such as Peter Roberts, who himself receives no remuneration of any kind for coordinating this project.

*Confidentiality*

Confidentiality is an important part of this study.  Only the participant providing the DNA sample will know his results, unless he decides he would like to share his information.  The small portion of the Y-chromosome that is analyzed does not contain genes that relate to medical issues.  All samples will be assigned an identifying kit number.  This kit number will be the only identifying information available for viewing by others.  No one other than the project coordinator and the testing laboratory will know who participates in the study or which result is from which participant.  The portion of the DNA tested gives a distinctive “signature” for a lineage rather than for an individual, so there is no risk of the data being applied to personal identity for misuse of any kind.

*Benefits of Participation*

1. Determine if two people with your surname are related (and descend from the same ancestor).
2. Identify the genetic genealogy profile of your male family line.
3. Identify your ancestry when traditional documentary genealogical research methods have failed (provide clues or solve brick walls).
4. Identify where to focus and pursue additional traditional documentary genealogical research.
5. Verify that your traditional documentary genealogical work is accurate and scientifically verified (confirm a family tree).
6. Get clues as to the place of origin of your immigrant ancestor.
7. Find genetic cousins you did not know you had.
8. Determine if other surnames are variants of your surname
9. Prove or disprove a research theory.
10. Be an early participant in a state-of-the-art project which is contributing to the world knowledge base for this new and exciting field, genealogy by genetics.
11. Your DNA will be preserved for 25 years at no additional cost and you will be entitled to reduced “add-on” prices for other tests.

*Join*

To participate in the Sasser DNA study, please go to the Sasser Surname
Project page
<http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=E55624>;, and complete a “Sasser Project Join Request.”  You should then order the Y-DNA25 – – Male 25 marker paternal test (or the Y-DNA37 – – Male 37
marker paternal test).  Next, send a genealogy chart of your known male Sasser ancestry to the project’s administrator, Peter Roberts <mailto:[email protected]>;, at [email protected].

A test kit and concise instructions will be sent to each male participant. summary linking individuals to the MCRA will be posted on this website.  Participants will be identified on this site by their kit number only.

*Project Time Line*

November 2003 – The Sasser DNA Surname Project was conceived and Web site was created.

December 2003 – Participants solicited via Sasser genealogy message boards and email.

————————————————————————

Participants who share the same difference likely share a common
ancestor more recently than they share a common ancestor with the rest
of the group.  Six Sasser lines trace their ancestry to North Carolina
and were not known to be related.  Y-chromosome testing has confirmed
they share a common ancestor since the adoption of surnames.   The
results suggest that the ancestors of Howell (born 1823) and John (born
1784) descend from an ancestor of John Henry (born 1778- John1) or an
ancestor of Lewis (born about 1835).   It also suggests the ancestor of
Thomas descends from an ancestor of Howell. A desecendant of a Sauser
from Switzerland is unrelated to the other Sasser lines.

*If the two Sasser participants show a 25/25 match there is a 50%
probability that the most recent common ancestor was no further back
than 7 generations ago (ca. 193 years) and a 90% probability that the
most recent common ancestor was no further back than 23 generations ago
(ca. 633 years).*

*DYS Marker Numbers with Red Backgrounds*

FamilyTreeDNA notes that it “…is obvious that  from our observation of
1000’s of samples that some markers change or mutate at a faster rate
than others. While that actual ‘faster rate’ has not yet been
definitively calculated, not all markers should be treated the same for
evaluation purposes.”  The above marker numbers with red backgrounds
have shown a faster mutation rate than average, and therefore these
markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into subsets, or
branches, within a family tree.  Explained another way, if a participant
matches exactly on all of the markers except for one or a few of the
markers that FamilyTreeDNA has determined as mutating more quickly, then
such a mismatch only slightly decreases the probability that two people
in a surname group who match 11/12 or even 23/25 do not share a recent
common ancestor.

Sasser phylogenetic tree

A phylogenetic tree for 37 markers indicates that an ancestor of Howell
Sasser, born 1823 and/or an ancestor of John Sasser born 1784 (as
represented by John2) is the ancestor of the other participants who have
their 37 maker results. It shows that John Henry Sasser b. 1778 (as
represented by John1) and Lewis Sasser are more closely related to
Howell and John2 then they are to each other. William Henry Crawford
(Crawood) Sasser born 1824, Smithfield, North Carolina is the
great-great-great-grandfather of John1 and the great-great-grandfather
of John3.

Participant 27110 is a descendant of Andrew Sauser born about 1847 in
Switzerland.  He does not share direct paternal line ancestry with other
Sassers or Sausers who have tested.  His SNP test reveals that he is
M253+ which confirms that he belongs to Y chromosome haplogroup I1a.

Participant 76026 is a descendant of Tippo H. Sasser born 1829 Wayne
County, NC.  He does not share direct paternal line ancestry with other
Sassers who have tested but matches 24 out of 25 markers with a Howell
with ancestry from Georgia.  Howell was a given name for several Sasser
families and this close matches suggests an unrecorded adoption.

*Origin of the Sasser Surname*

North German:  Derivative of Sasse “Saxon.”  Habitational name for
someone from any of several places named Sassen in Rhineland, Hesse, and
Pomerania.  /Source: Dictionary of American Family Names Oxford
University Press, 2003./

Sasse is an old Danish word for “sluice” and a sasser is a sluice
keeper.  Parts of eastern England were controlled and settled by Danes
prior to the 11th century.  Kent and Sussex were also originally settled
by Jutes (Danes from Jutland).  The Sassers may be of Danish origin.

*Historical notes on Sassers in England by Joseph Sasser*

A manorial survey for the Manor of Somersham in Huntingdonshire in 1222
states the following concerning “Customary Tenants”:  Richard Sauser
holds a virgate by the same customs.  The term same customs seems to
refer to the fact that the people listed before him held their land by
the annual payment of a small sum of money value.  In 1239 Roger le
Sauser abjured the realm after pleading guilty to burning down the house
of one Joce de la Garre at a place named Henry Green in Kent.  In 1357
William le Sauser was appointed Bridgemaster (Warden) of the Ouse Bridge
at York.

Sasser wills were registered in the Shire of Kent (England) in the 16th
and 17th century.  Margery Sawser’s will was registered at Chatham in
1594.  John Sasser’s will was registered at Mottingham Parish in 1646.
Further, there was a record of the marriage to Henry Sawser to Joane
Dixon on Oct. 5, 1631 in the Parish of Great Stanmore, Middlesex.

Most, if not all (especially the 13th cent, references) seem to point
to the fact that the Sasser, Sawser, Saucer, Sauser name was in England
long before any migrations into England (other that the Normans) began.

*Documented references to Sassers/Sawcers/Sawsers/Saucers in England in
the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries by Howell Sasser*

There are many more references to Sassers in the period well before any
German, French immigrants came into the United Kingdom or its colonies
in significant numbers, but this proves the point that Sassers have been
in England from very early times.
