FAMILY HISTORY:(entered into computer by Joseph Theron Smith, himself):
Served first mission in East Central States (1942/1944) under two mission Presidents: James P. Jensen and Graham H. Doxey. Labored a year in the office as Bookkeeper, Commissarian and Membership Clerk.
Inducted into Army in 1944, received basic training in Camp Roberts,California, and served 1-1/2 years in the Philippines as a clerk in the AG Section. (Met sister Fujardo, only LDS filipino member in Manila.) Also
witnessed the baptism of the first Menenite Serviceman in the Church. Had filed in desk drawer a book containing the entire plan for invading Japan, including total army personnel and equipment. â(If President Truman had allowed the atomic bomb to be dropped six months before he did, over 100,000 Americans' lives would have been saved.)(Email from son, Steven Smith: (Theron) " was a Technical Sergeant in the Philippines. He traded in his rifle for a typewriter because when they found out he could type so fast he was able to make a difference in the administrative offices of the CICs office.")
Worked as a Secretary and Printer for 29 years in the LDS Church Offices. Released in the BYU Marriott Center after serving as a Ward and Stake Clerk for a combined total of 38 years. Served as a Ward Clerk in the 29th Ward,
Riverside Stake, when the ward population rose to 1,700 within a year, and was the largest Ward in the Church.
Served second mission with wife Neva in England, Coventry(1986/1987). Used temporary computer program to move research films around the entire U.K. Suffered a heart attack and went to the Solihull Hospital. Heart stopped three times. Duringthe last one, saw his mother who seemed to be waiting to see if he would live and return to his family or enter the "spirit world" with her. Was able to return home and visit with each of his children. Also able to input all of his ancestors on the computer.
Had a daughter Nancy (known as a "Blue Baby") who died as an infant. Allowed the doctor to do an autopsy on Nancy to see if the medical profession could find answers to the reasons for this type of "infant heart problem".

This is the "real" story as told by Dad. It has become a favorite with our kids, told many times:
Dad was climbing up a ladder as a young missionary to aid the local members in painting their new chapel. A paint bucket was resting on top of the ladder. He happened to catch a glimpse of a beautiful young woman walking into the newly built chapel. As he turned to get a better look, with paint brush in hand, he knocked the paint bucket off the ladder and it landed on top of his head upside down. There he stood, on the ladder, with a nearly full bucket of white paint dribbling down his head onto his face and neck, facing his future wife.
And this was the first time he and Mom met.
Of course, he blamed the paint for causing him to prematurely lose his hair, as Shirley said. But fortunately for all us kids, the event did not result in a loss of his charm, at least in Momâs eyes!
