Henrico County Court Orders 1 April 1684/5

Edward Hatcher having apprehended and brought before the court two person on suspicion of being runaways their names being Robert Burton and Thomas Carke (the l in Clarke was scratched through), inhabitants of St. Mary’s in Maryland and now traveling towards the South who were examined by the court were found not to have legal passes. The said Burton confessed that he was in debt in the County of St. Mary’s and for that reason he left with the other to accompany him. The clerk of the court was ordered to draw a writ for their safe conveyance to the aforesaid place of their habituation by the
constable and that in the same term they be committed to prison and the clerk in ordered to give Edward Hatcher certificate to the next assembly of his good service.

These may certify that this day Edward Hatcher of Henrico County did apprehend and bring to court two person on suspicion of being runaways their names being Robert Burton and Thomas Carke,
inhabitants of St. Mary’s in Maryland; no proof that they were as suspected they were sent by the court to the next adjacent constable with a warrant in order to their safe Conveyance home.
