Lenoir County, North Carolina 1844 Tax List

=========================================================
1844 TAX LIST OF LENOIR COUNTY, N. C.text file of the Lenoir County Tax List of 1844 with the help of Martha Marble, submitted by Guy Potts

North Carolina State Archives – “Treasurer’s and Comptroller’s Papers, County Settlements with the State”, Box 6.

There are nine columns:
1. Name of Taxpayer
2. White Poles
3. Black Poles
4. Pole Tax
5. Number of acres
6. Valuation of Land
7. Land Tax
8. Stud Horses and Jacks
9. Aggregate amount of Taxes.

In some cases there is also a column for Gates;
however, there do not appear to be any.
It was the intention of this transcriber to include all the columns;
however, it is difficult to arrange columns successfully for a
website so only the following information is given:

1. Name of Taxpayers
2. White Poles
3. Black Poles
4. Number of acres
5. Value.

If the researcher wishes to compute the amount of tax paid the following information can be used: for the tax – multiply the number of polls by sixtycents and multiply the land valuation by .0003.

CAPTAIN TAYLOR’S DISTRICT – These names indicate those close to the Jones County line on the eastern part of the county maybe running up along the County line towards Contentnea Creek.
(Example: BROADWAY Jesse 140a, $240 Name of taxable BROADWAY Jesse, white poles ___, black poles ___ number of acres 140, value $240)
