I reckon that Edmund and Hannah’s daughter Elizabeth had several husbands – Joseph Tatham (m 1842), William Watson (m 1849), Tempest Fort (m 1858) and finally her widowed brother in law James Whitaker (m 1872).

26.09.1841 Nancy [20] dau of William & Alice of Cowling, clogger, born 06.10.1838

Further notes for William Bannister

William certainly went by the name Bannister in the censuses and baptised all his children under that name. He possibly also married as Bannister but his daughters Mary [14], Hannah [15], Elizabeth [16] and Sarah [17] all married under his legal name, albeit with a variety of spellings. Unless there was a William Myrrl or Merral of Cowling who was of similar age to William Bannister of Lane Ends and who had daughters of the same names and ages as William Bannister and who never appeared in any censuses (which I consider to be nigh impossible) it is these marriages that prove the Merral/Myrrl connection beyond any doubt whatsoever. Nancy [20] appears to have married as Nancy Bannister and Ellen never married but had two illegitimate children, Willis and Alice, who also went by the name Bannister. However both William and his wife were probably registered at death in the name of Myrrl. I have not found their burials in either Kildwick or Cowling but they might have been buried at Keighley.

[8] Mary Bannister (born 1802, dau of William Bannister & Nancy Merral) & William Shuttleworth

married 31 March 1823 St Andrew’s Kildwick, William a shoemaker, Mary a minor , both of Cowling

24 Feb 1829 SHUTTLEWORTH Mary of Cowling aged 26

Notes for Mary Bannister [8]

Mary’s daughter Mary Ann Shuttleworth was staying with her Bannister grandparents in 1841.Her father may have remarried and moved to Bradford and eventually Shipley. Mary Ann Shuttleworth married firstly Thomas Davy, shoemaker, in 1848 and secondly Joseph Brigg in 1877.

[9] Hannah Bannister (born 1803, dau of William Bannister & Nancy Merral) & James Jackson

married 3 Jun 1834 at St Andrew’s Kildwick, James a joiner of Sutton, Hannah a spinster of Cowling

moved to Laycock, Nr Keighley

[10] Stephen Bannister (born 1808 son of William Bannister & Nancy Merral) & Dinah Laycock

married 13 Mar 1837 at St Andrew’s Kildwick, Stephen a carpenter, both of Cowling

wife Dinah Laycock probably dau of Jonas Laycock & Sarah Watson

a possible burial at St Andrew’s Kildwick:

4.12.1846 BANNISTER Stephen of Cowling aged 33 (age either a mistake or wrong Stephen)

Notes

Whether the above burial is correct or not, Stephen died before 1849 when his widow Dinah remarried to Joseph Davy (himself a widower with several small children) and she moved to Upper House Farm at Cowling Hill. She named her first son of this second marriage Jonas.

[11] Sarah Bannister (born 1812, dau of William Bannister & Nancy Merral) & David Green

c1842 Stephen

c1844 Robert

c1846 Elizabeth

c1850 George

c1854 Amelia, died in 1870

c1855 Sarah

Further notes for George Bannister [12]

George’s wife, Sarah Watson, was NOT the daughter of James Watson & Hannah Emmott as has been claimed elsewhere (James Watson’s daughter married Stephen Emmott). This said, I cannot be certain who Sarah’s parents were although her grandparents were almost certainly William & Sarah Watson. The name Henrietta Catherina was a tradition in this particular branch of the Cowling Watson family.

Marriages of children:

William married Martha Binns of Cowling in 1866 and remained in Cowling

Ann married George Laycock in 1861 and Samuel Shuttleworth in 1882

Stephen married Martha Whitaker of Cowling in 1870

GENERATION 5

[13] George Hurst (born c1817 in Wigan, Lancs., probable son of Alice Hurst) & Betty Butterworth

probable marriage q4 1846 in Keighley Registration District. George married under the name HURST

wife Betty Butterworth POSSIBLY illegitimate dau of Rebecca Butterworth baptized 15 Jul 1827 at St Andrew’s, Kildwick, and living in the household of Stephen Bannister & Dinah Laycock in 1841 but the age given in her probable burial record does not tally with the census-given age (see burial below). Betty died a few days after her son William was born.

baptisms of children at St Andrew’s, Kildwick:

21.10.1849 William BANNISTER son of George & Betty of Cowling, Weaver, born 13.07.1847

burials at St Andrew’s, Kildwick:

24.07.1847 Elizabeth BANNISTER of Cowling, aged 28

Further notes for George Hurst / Bannister [13]

George is listed as George HURST in the 1841 census when he was residing in the household of his “adoptive” grandparents, William and Nancy Bannister. He also appears to have married under the name HURST in 1846. However, I am confident that George adopted the surname of his step-father and baptized his son as a Bannister. George was buried as a Bannister, as was his wife Betty, although they were buried at different churches. This is confirmed by George’s memorial inscription (see below). George remained at Lane Ends in Cowling until his death and in the censuses 1851 to 1871 he gave consistent information regarding his age (born c1817/18), his birthplace (Wigan, Lancs.) and his occupation (Weaver). After Betty’s death (probably due to complications of childbirth), this son William lived with William [07] and Alice Bannister where he is listed as their grandson.

Memorial Inscription at Cowling Hill Baptist Chapel (notes only from transcription at Keighley Library)

George Bannister of Lane Ends died 14th March 1874 in his 56th year & Elizabeth his wife interred at Kildwick 22nd  July 1847 in her 29th year.

[14] Mary Bannister Myrrl (born 1821, dau of William Bannister Myrrl & Alice Hurst) & Michael Smith

15.06.1862 Solomon son of Michael & Mary of Sutton a Quarryman, born 13.2.1862

Burials at St Andrew’s Kildwick

7.5.1873 SMITH Mary of Sutton aged 52

7.12.1888 SMITH Michael of Cragg Side, Sutton, aged 68

Further notes for Mary [14]

Mary’s husband’s SMITH family were living at Crag End, Sutton, in 1841. Michael’s parent’s, Thomas & Mary married in 1818 – they are both listed as being of Cowling at the time, Thomas a weaver, Mary a minor and also a SMITH by birth. Thomas and Mary named their children Elizabeth, John (b c1821), Edward, Michael, Martin, Thomas, Mary and Wilson. Thomas’ parents were therefore probably John Smith, a mason, and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Cowling. I have wondered if this might by “my” John Smith’s family but have not managed to make any connections.

Mary and Michael remained at Crag End all their lives and were buried at Kildwick where their gravestone still stands.

[15] Hannah Bannister Merral (born c1822, dau William Bannister Myrrl & Alice Hurst) & Eli Smith, & William Smith

1st Marriage (from microfiche at Keighley Library)

Eli Smith, full, bach, Labourer, Lothersdale, father unknown & Hannah Merrall, full, spin, of Cowling, Father William Merrall, Witnesses Michael Smith, James Gill (i.e. Hannah’s brothers-in-law)

In 1851 husband Eli Smith was living at Malsis House in Sutton, aged 20, born in Carlton. In 1841 he was probably the ten year old Elisas Smith living in Lothersdale with Ann Smith (32) and William Smith (2). I have not found a baptism that would fit.

2nd Marriage (from marriage certificate)

25th October 1871 –  Marriage solemnized at Skipton Register Office

16.01.1859 Eli Smith of Glusburn aged 28yrs

In 1861 Hannah Smith, aged 39, a widow and born in Cowling, was living at Town Tops, Glusburn, With her were daughters Nancy (7), Mary Elizabeth (6) and Sarah (4 months). Boarding in the same household was a William Smith, aged 46, a widower, weaver and born in Cowling, with his children Jane, Elizabeth and George. It looks as if Hannah and William were not married but had already had daughter Sarah together. In 1871 Hannah and William were living in separate households in Glusburn Village, both widowed, but by then their son Henry had arrived and was living with his mother. Hannah and William eventually married later that year where Hannah named her father as William BANNISTER instead of Merral or Myrrl. In 1881 they are living as a family at Town Tops – William, Hannah, Sarah and Henry.

William Smith’s first wife was Elizabeth, born in Lothersdale c1817, maiden name also SMITH. In 1841 and 1851 they were living at Cowling Hill and had at least eight children.
