46. Robert Coxe, Sr., of Perquimans died testate between 21 Feb 1725-6 and 25 Nov 1730, Little River precinct, Chowan Co., NC. His will was filed among NC Secretary of State loose wills. Robert Coxe married Elizabeth (_), named in his will. On 9 July 1722, Robert “Cock” of Perquimans Co., NC, purchased 100 acres of land from Zachariah Nixon, according to Perquimans Co., NC. Deed Book B, no 318.

Page 94-95 John Herring 79. John Herring, Sr., the son of Anthony Herring, was born ca. 1680, Isle of Wight Co., VA and died ca. 1754, Johnston Co., NC. Her married Catherine [_] . Herring witnessed deeds in Chowan as early as July 1718, according to Chowan Co., NC, Deed Book B#1, p. 601. It has not been proved – and most likely never will be – that Catherine was nee Morbe but the source of this theory is found ina deed dated 18 Oct 1715, Chowan Co., NC, Deed Book #1 p. 210 in which George Morbe and wife Cather assigned to John Herring of lower parish of Isle of Wight a tract of 380 acres on the south side of the Bear Swamp. The lack of monetary stipulations in the deed and the repetition of the name Catherine are both coincidentally compelling, but not at all sufficient for proof. There is neither proof that John’s father Anthony married Rebecca West as stated in James Maurice Grimwood, Herring Highlights (1642-1998 p. 9 and p. 21) although that Herring genealogy is invaluable in many ways. One wishes that Mr. Grimwood had habit of providing actual documentary references for the many valuable records to which he continually alludes. On p. 21 of the aforementioned work is a reference to a promissory note dated 1 Jan 1753 located in the NC Archives, which named John, J., Simon, Benjamin, and Joshua Herring as sons of John, Sr.

Marriage Stephen Cobb and Patience Bridger

35. Patience Bridgers, the daughter of Samuel Bridgers and Mary Johnson … married Stephen Cobb, the son of Robert Cobb and Mary (Deberry)
P102 John Williams above could have married Mary, who after his death married second, Henry Cobb. This would explain how Henry Cobb and Mary Cobb came into possession of land descended from William Williams. There are no records showing how Henry Cobb acquired the land; therefore, it musst have come through his wife…

135. Robert Peele II, the son of Robert Peele I and (_), was born by 1650 and died before 1704. He married Sarah (_) Jarrat, the widow of Thomas Jarrat. On 24 Apr 1703, Robert “Peale” was granted 134 acres in the Lower Parish of Nansemond CO., VA on the east side of the Nansemond River, near the Sleepy Hole and John Petters, in Belson’s line. This land had been granted to RIchard Russell, 27 Aug 1653, who sold it to Edward Dence, from whom it escheated to Thomas Jarrat, 6 Apr 1671, who bequeathed it to his wife Sarah, who intermarried with the said Peale. This concatenation of events can be found in VA Land Patent Book 9, p. 512.
The list of children below is based on Hugh Buckner Johnston’s altogether reasonable treatise on the Peele family of Nansemond and Northampton found among his typescripts at the Wilson County (NC) Public Library. Mr. Johnston obviously examined the records of The Vestry Book of the Upper Parish of Nansemond County, which would be the parish bordering the Virginia-North Carolina line, and extracted the names of the other males with the surname of Peele. This is not a completely “unscientific” deduction, but is based on the conclusion that Robert Peele II was the only offspring of Robert (, and that other males owning land near his would be to his children, and not of other heretofore unknown siblings.
The Children of Robert Peele II and Sarah (_) Jarrat:
[i] a. William Peele, born ca. 1679
[ii] b. Robert Peele III, born ca. 1681 married Judith (_)
[iii] c. Ephraim Peele born ca. 1685
[iv] d. Joseph Peele, born ca. 1687.
136. Robert Peele III, the son of Robert Peele II and Sarah (_) Jarratt, was born ca. 1681, Nansemond Co., VA and died intestate there about 1748. He was listed with 275 acres of land in Annie Laurie Wright Smith’s The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, p. 68. After his death, his Quaker family sold their land and removed to the Rich Square area of Northampton Co., NC. His wife Judith (_) died testate between 22 June and Aug Court 1756, Northampton CO., NC, Secretary of State loose wills.
The bracketed dates of birth below have been taken from Hugh Buckner Johnston’s chapter on the Peele family, and cannot be proved. The volume in question is not presently available at the Wilson County Public Library. Children mentioned in the will of Judith Peele are marked with the symbol “&”.

127. Christopher Nicholson the son of Edmund Nicholson and Elizabeth Simpson of Lynn, Essex Co., MA (who married second, [_] Brown), was born say 1638, Essex Co., MA and died 8 Dec 1688, Perquimans Co., NC. He married first 22.8.1662, Lynn, Essex Xo., MA (Vital Records, vol. 2, p. 279), Hannah Rednap, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah [_] Redknap of Lynn. He married second, as her first husband, 11 Apr 1680, Perquimans Co, NC. Ann Atwood, daughter of Thomas Atwood at Middlesex, England. The widow Ann (Atwood) Nicholson married second, 26 June 1690, Perquimans Co, NC. Richard Dorman, by whom she had at least two more children. She married third, 12.11.1711. Perquimans Monthly Meeting, Richard Cheston, Jr. Records of her death have not been located. For more information concerning the Rednap family, see John Anderson Brayton, “Nicholson and Redknap Families of Massachusetts and North Carolina,” in The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, vol. 30 no 2 [May 2004]. pp. 173-197, especially editor Winslow: excellent addendum.

134. Robert Peel I was born by 1630 and died after 1694, probably in Nansemond Co., Va. He was granted 350 acres of land on the southwest side of the “Pasbetanke” River between Dr. Relfe and John Battle, in North Carolina on 25 Sept 1663, according to Virginia Land Patent Book 4, p. 96 (588). This land would eventually fall into Pasquotank Co. On 30 Apr 1679, Robert Peele, Sr. and Robert Peele, Jr. jointly patented 179 acres in Nansemond Co. Va at the head of Mr. Bennett’s Creek, half of which was an ancient patent granted to the said Peele, according to VA Land Patent Book 6, p. 678. Robert Peele’s last definite appearance was a Justice of the Peace for Nansemond Co., VA on 13 Nov 1694, wherein he witnessed a power of attorney from James Alexander of Nansemond to Alexander Lillington. The name of his wife does to appear. Robert Peele’s land in Nansemond was eventually cut off into North Carolina.

137. Robert Peele IV, the son of Robert Peele III and Judith (_) was born 5.29.1709, Nansemond Co., VA and died testate 13 July 1782, Rich Square Monthly Meeting, Northampton Co., NC. His will was recorded in Northampton Co., NC. Will Book 1, p.172. He married first ca 1729 Elizabeth (_) of Nansemond, who died ca. 1749. According to Hugh Buckner Johnston’s treatise on the Peele family, supposedly located in the Wilson County [NC] Public Library, Peele’s first wife was Elizabeth Edgerton, the possible daughter of Patrick and Mary Edgerton of Nansemond, but I can find no proof of this. Robert Peele IV married second, 6.1.1750. Perquimans Monthly Meeting, Charity Dickinson, the daughter of John and Rebecca (_) Dickinson of Northampton.
The children of both wives of Robert Peele IV are recorded on p. 225 of William Wade Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of Americna Quaker Genealogy, vol. 1, North Carolina, although Hinshaw confused Charity the wife with Charity the daughter. On p. 252 of that same volume, in confirmation of Hinshaw’s mistake, daughter Mary is listed in her 1750 marriage as the daughter of “Elizabeth deceased.” Hinshaw also confused first wife Elizabeth with daughter Betsey Eliabeth (_) Peele was clearly not alive just prior to her putative death date on 4.25.1763, as Hinshaw states.
The Children of Robert Peele IV and ELizabeth (_) births recorded Rich Square Monthly Meeting, Northampton Co., NC:

He married third, Rich Square Monthly Meeting 4.16.1774, Anne Jucely. There were no children by these last two marriages.
In the minutes of Pasquotank Monthly Meeting, Ann Pike “now Boles” was dismissed for marring out of faith. This is confirmed by Pasquotank Co., NC Deed book D&E p. 429 in which she signed a sort of pre-nuptial agreement with her soon-to-be-husband.
