Captain John West was a brother of Lord Delaware, and after a period of service in Virginia, as councillor and governor, died at his residence at West Point, Va, about 1660. He was born December 14, 1590, married Anne —, and was one of the two first commanders of the settlement on York River. There his son, afterwards knwon as Lt. Col. John West was born in 1632, being the first child born on York River. He married Unity, daughter of Major Joseph Croshaw of York County, a fact attested by the will of Major Croshaw (1667) and a deed (1887) for “Poplar Neck” (afterwards Ripon Hall) from John West, to whom it was left by Major Croshaw, and Unity his wife, daughter of said Major Joseph Croshaw. The deed conveyed the property to Edmund Jenings, Esq., and describes it as on St. Andrews Creek, the early name for the present Carter’s Creek in York County, named for RObert Carter, who received it from Edmund Jenings and gave it to his son Col Landon Carter.

Lt. Col. John West died about 1689, leaving issue (by his wife Unity —) (1) Anne who marrred Henry Fox, of King William Co., (2) Thomas (3) John (4) Nathaniel….
